FORM presents Our Painting About Ngurra by the Spinifex Hill Artists. Featuring stunning canvas works by some of the Pilbara’s most exciting emerging, mid-career and senior artists, Our Painting About Ngurra marks the Spinifex Hill Artists’ first-ever exhibition at The Goods Shed.
The Spinifex Hill Artists work from South Hedland’s Spinifex Hill Studio, which is managed by FORM. Their work features in major national events, exhibitions across Australia and overseas, and is held in significant art collections.
The creative practice of the Spinifex Hill Artists is as diverse as the many language groups the art collective represents. More than 100 artists, from regions spanning the Kimberley to the south of Western Australia, access the Studio annually.
Ngurra means both ‘Country’ and ‘home’ in Western Desert languages. It is a popular subject matter the Spinifex Hill Artists often refer to in their work.
Our Painting About Ngurra comprises over 60 new works, such as bold paintings by nationally-renowned artists Gloria, Nyangulya Katie Nalgood and Doreen Chapman. The exhibition also showcases haunting new landscapes by Lester Prize shortlisted artist Ilyampi Victor Burton. And of course, Perth audiences will receive an introduction to the Studio’s rising stars, including Lena Alone, Gladys Kuru Bidu and Beryl Ponce.
Our Painting About Ngurra opens 6:00PM, Thursday 14 October. Artists will travel from the Pilbara to attend and celebrate the launch. An artist and curator talk will take place, 1:00PM, Saturday 16 October.
Our Painting About Ngurra is on display at The Goods Shed until 12 December, 2021.
